What A Week!!

For the whole of last week and this week, its the 2 weeks mid-semester break!!Yippee!!At least I get a chance to break away from school work and start slacking around. Been spending alot of time watching DVDs.

[Sun] Watched Infernal Affairs 1 and 3. Could not get hold of 2 as the girls did not have it with them. But, was grateful for the movies.

[Mon] Watched Australian Idol on tv and walked the dean's dog, Emma. She's a golden retriever, about 4 1/2 yrs of age. She's quite a big dog and heavy to tug at when she refuses to walk away from a particular dog. Nonetheless, Jeannie, Phoebe and I enjoyed her company. At night, Phoebe and I got "blackmailed" into playing mahjong since we wanted to borrow dvds from Liufei. But, I'm not blaming her as I get to pick up a skill, playing mahjong.

My dream dog!!

[Tue] Woke up earlier than usual to go for a pan-cake breakfast, hosted by Vanessa. This event was organised by the OCF-ers. (OCF= Overseas Christian Fellowship, get to meet fellow singaporeans and other international students). After the hearty breakfast, Phoebe and I went to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. For your info, the movies screened in Adelaide is quite slow. When we first arrived in Adelaide, they were still showing Mr & Mrs Smith. Imagine that! Anyway, the show was ok. Lots of singing especially each time when a child gets into "trouble" while inside Willy Wonka's factory. In the evening, I watched Harry Potter and the Socerer's Stone and played mahjong into the night.

[Wed] Went up to the main campus library with Phoebe, to borrow Pride & Prejudice. A rather literature film and it was 5 hours long!! Sat until my butt had pins and needles. At night, I went out with the other Singaporeans and Malaysians hallmates to catch crab. Well, we all went in hope of catching a few crabs. However, instead of changing crabs, we caught A cuttlefish. Yes, 1 cuttlefish to feed all 9of us (since I don't take seafood).

[Thur] Watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and X-men 2 in the morning. After that, Phoebe, Jeannie and I went up to main campus to do a psychology and we get paid A$10 for doing it. Cool.. In the evening, we watched Muriel's Wedding.

[Fri] Attended DAA (Dietetics Association of Australia) conference at Uni Adelaide. Had to wake up really early, about 6.30am to get ready for the conference. Since it is in the city, we had to take a bus down. As with conferences, it was pretty boring, listening to lectures. I was hoping the conference would be more of a discussion style. After the conference ended at about 5.30pm, Jeannie, Phoebe and I went to Rundle mall to do some shopping and had dinner at the Thailand restuarant. The food was good since we tried it when our parents were here.

[Sat] Went to Habourtown for some shopping. We heard that it the prices were much cheaper than the hopping belts like Marion or Rundle mall since it was factory outlets. True enough, the prices were cheap. The coats were selling at A$19.95. I would have bought it if there were my sizes. But, I managed to get a pink colour long-sleeved shirt at Cotton On for A$10. It was selling 2 for A$25 at Rundle Mall. Also, I bought a blue-coloured jacket for my brother. I hope u can fit into it. After the shopping, we watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban and Dirty Dancing.

In summary, I have watched 10 different shows in 1 week. Wow!Although I did not do any work, I was glad that I had ample time to relax and not think about school work. Ok, I got to start on my presentation. Till I blog again, take care peeps!

Mid-Autumn Festival

How I missed eating those mooncakes!!I am glad that Haoxiang organised a "BBQ" to celebrate the mid-autumn festival. Noticed that the word BBQ is in inverted commas? The initial plan was a BBQ. However, as there were 2 bookings for the BBQ pit, the duty tutor mixed up the bookings. As Haoxiang told some of us to grill the chicken as the pit was not working initally, we all moved to the Abbey to stay out of the cold and to see what we are eating. It was a time to allow us to be able to celebrate the festival as well as to eat mooncakes. After the eating, a few of us decided to do a night walk with the lanterns.

During the walk, we happened to bump into 1 of aussie gal. This was the conversation that took place.

Aussie gal: What are you guys doing?
We: Celebrating Mid-autumn festival.

Aussie gal: Mid-Autumn?
We: Yar, its like spring now but back in China, its autumn.

And again, for the 4th time in a semester, the fire alarm went off. ARGH!!

The Royal Adelaide Show

The 2005 Royal Show is an annual MEGA event in South Australia with many rides to sit, interesting seminars to explore, games to play and showbuys to buy and choose from. Well, being my first semester here in Adelaide, how could I missed it? So, I went to the show with Phoebe, a few hallies as well as some of my coursemates...Entering the show ground is like entering a gambling den cos before you know it, u are taking your money out to spend on some games, food or showbag. I spent about A$80 in total..bought 1 showbag, a 30 inch teddy bear for my da jie, sat rides (hangover and bumper cars), paid for my food as well..Well, I guess, I need to be more prudent in spending in the following months and as the 2 weeks semester break is fast approaching (its coming in 5 more days, YAY!!), plans have been made for shopping. Ok, enough of talking, here are some snapshots of me at the royal adelaide show.

Girls' Day; Alcohol & its Effect

Did you know, that 1g of alcohol gives you 7Kcal? Well, I have also learnt that when alcohol is consumed, it gets metabolised over the other nutrients in the liver. Of course, excessive consumption of alcohol will cause alot of trouble to the liver. Excessive alcoholism can cause fatty liver, hepatitis, and the worst being liver cirrhosis. Ok, enough about all this facts.

I guess, I canNOT hold my alcohol (or rather, liqour). While, yesterday(Sat, 3/9) was Girls' Day and the university hall organised events for the girls. Since it was a day for indulgence, champagne was served for morning tea just after our kick-boxing exercise. Not good for a thirst quencher huh? But I drank a glass of orange juice and had a piece of muffin before I drank the glass of champagne. After that glass of champagne mixed with orange juice, I started to feel light-headed and my face felt hot and red. The effects of alcohol started to kick in. After pampering ourselves with some of the products from body shop, I headed for a warm shower so that I would be smelling good for the rest of the day. Lunch was provided and we headed up to the nillage community centre for the meal. After lunch, we had girls talk where 2 counsellors from the Health and Counselling Centre up at the main campus came down to talk to us about sex, relationship etc.

After that girly talk, we played passing the parcel. The game was good as it ended on a good note where verybody who was playing it received a prezzie. Wine tasting was up next. I learnt many new terms to describe a wine be it red or white, how to recognize where its from and stuff. After 6 1/2 cups of the wine samples, I begin to feel the effects of the alcohol again. Yes, as we waited for dinnertime, I fell asleep on the sofa while phoebe, rosni and sasi played pictionary. At the end of this, you all would be exclaiming, "WHAT A LOUSY DRINKER I AM!!!" Well, I simply cannot hold my liqour since I am not used to taking alcohol. I guess, I do NOT want to reach that stage where I become addicted to it. Lucky for me, I don't really like the taste of alcohol. Pretty bitter!!

Anyhow, Girls' Day ended with a movie and a pizza dinner up in the village community centre and a supper at Hungry Jacks (the symbol is pretty much the same as Burger King) with Hao Xiang, Mark & Phoebe. As I prepared for bed, I began to reflect on the amount of calories that I had consumed, snacking on chips, chocloates, brownies (they make "mean" brownies), gummies and pizza. I bet you, I had put on the couple of weight that I lost. Guess, I'll be exercising more frequently this week. Take care pple!!!
