Fighting the Zz monster

Ever experienced the following:

1) Drooping eyelids
2) Constant yawning & tearing of the eyes
3) Lack of bloodflow to the brain
4) Getting double vision from all the readings/write-ups that you have to complete by the end of the day

Well, a recent diagnosis from the quack doctor diagnosed that one is suffering from three-thirty-itis. Basically, it is for individuals who suffer from these symptoms, mostly in the arvo, and requires a good cuppa.

I usually suffer from this especially in the morning and in the afternoon following lunch. Trying to fight the Z monster is not an easy feat. Each day, I come up with new idea(s) to keep the monster at bay. Not to mention, I always come out in victory. Alright, enough of my crapping, time to divert my attention to the work at hand. Oh, I dislike rainy days!

Rainy days by William Wise
I do not like a rainy day.
The road is wet, the sky is gray.
They dress me up, from head to toes,
In lots and lots of rubber clothes.
I wish the sun would come and stay.
I do not like a rainy day.

Christmas Spirit

Ever heard of this Christmas song:

Christmas isn't Christmas till it happens in your heart?
Somewhere deep inside you is where Christmas really starts...

Well, my family does not have the habit of celebrating Christmas neither does exchanging gifts comes into play. To us, Christmas is just like another holiday where the entire family is together, just spending time together. To me, spending time with my family is the best gift that one can ever get. Ever since returning from Adelaide, I realised that I love spending time at home even though there may not be anything planned for that day.

Anyways, I celebrated my first Christmas party in Singapore at the HPB. Initially, it felt weird as I was not close to the colleagues in the Youth Health Division. However, after a round of some ice-breakers, I started to warm up and get wacky with my colleagues. Its a wonder how much an ice-breaker can make or break a group. Anyways, I had fun on friday! Shall let the pics do the talking. Merry Christmas, peeps!

Tis the season to get FAT!

Well, Christmas is just round the corner and one can expect to indulge with all the festive goodies. However, if one is not careful, one may put on the calories that has been burnt off during the year. Anyway, as I am looking at this week's calendar, I can't help but notice that I will be having sumptous foods, plus the rain is not helping me to keep the calories at bay!

Mon: Met up with the SSA committee members. Had an expensive dinner at Ding Tai Feng. The food served was alright except for the fact that the portion size is small, oily and the expensive pricetag that came along with it.

Tue: Met up with my uni coursemates for a time of whinging and gossiping. We had sushi for dinner and then proceeded to Gelare for the half-priced waffles!!!Haha..It was great catching up them and Congrats to Liyan and Lilian!

Thur: Met sophie for lunch at some hawker centre in Chinatown for some porridge. At least, this is one meal that I did not feel guilty after eating it.

Sat: Meeting Kar Hian and Phoebe for some dim sum buffet at some I-don't-know-where restaurant.

Alrighty, I will update and post more pictures when I have received the pictures. Till the next one, Have a very Merry Christmas!

First day at work

My first day at work was anything but dull! I had the opportunity to be able to attend a focus group as part of a Major Project undertaken by TP students (in fact, they are my juniors!) at Pats schoolhouse. There, my mind began searching for the file titled "Communication and Nutrition Counselling_Small group facilitation". I felt that the topics that I learnt this year were beginning to be put into good use.

My work experience at the Youth Health Division will see me working through a couple of projects:
1) Literature review of the existing regional and international healthy eating programmes (I am already beginning to dread this project despite being day 2 of work. Its like a repetition of Public Health and Community Nutrition Task 4!)
2) Plan and propose a suitable framework modelled after the school's Model School Tuckshop Programme for pilot implementation in tertiary institutions particularly, TP and NUS.

I reckon this working experience will enable me to build my foundation of networks which would definitely come in handy when I enter the nutrition and dietetics field next year. Okay, back to work!

Praise the Lord

No emails from the lecturers re supplementary papers for 2 of the examinable topics. *Smiles and mutters, "Praise the Lord for all the wonderful things He has blessed me with! Thank you Lord!" Fingers crossed for my non-examinable topic, Public Health and Community Nutrition that I will do well for the last assignment.

Till the next post, ciao!

Nothing beats HOME!

Its good to be home! You know you are home when you start to perspire the moment you step out of the cool shower. Ok, I've been home for close to a week and I am enjoying every moment of it. Not to forget, trying to nurse a cold and a cough that I caught on Saturday which does not seem to want to go away.

Have not been doing anything great but spend a GREAT day out with Miss Sophie yesterday which, at times, left me feeling rather exasperated. Ok, in fact, I really enjoyed your company, Soph! I am really amazed at how much our friendship have blossomed over the years. By the way, enjoy your trip to Taiwan and I look forward to the many future meet-ups!!!

An update on my life. Nothing much is going to happen until I start my vacation job at the Youth Health Division at Health Promotion Board, the week starting 11 Dec until 11 Jan'07. So, in the meantime, I reckon I am going to lose some weight! Alright till the next one...Cheers!

*Looks up and mutters, Lord, thank you for everything!*

Sigh of Relief

At 10.15 am (Adelaide time) yesterday, my heart did a flip. Yes!The exams are officially over for my coursemates and I. A big pat on the back for making it through this year! We did it!!! Alright, now I shall work hard for my final assignment for Public Health and continue to pack my stuff where I can enjoy 3 full months of well-deserved break. *Hands crossed, looks up, smiles and mutters, "Thank you Lord for seeing me through this challenging year."

And, I have a piece of good news. I don't think it would affect anybody more than it would affect me. I received news yesterday that I will be doing my community placement at HPB next year instead of returning to Adelaide. This means that I will only be returning to Adelaide for 5 weeks of solid intensive from March to 6th May and then I will be back in Singapore for good until I graduate in Dec next year. This is a 97% chance that the timetable will not change unless something happen out of Iris's control. Haha.

Alright, enough of my blabbering. Look out for my return to the little red dot on 23rd Nov!

Sophie: we should arrange to meet after your exams!!I can't wait to see you! Study hard for your exams!

Exams starting tomorrow

Strength for 'E' journey

Its amazing to note how the human mind can store so much information! In fact, the human mind is like a Pentium processor, storing all the conversations that one has had in their lifetime, scanning and storing jpegs of memories and people we've met, and even data that one needs to assist with the preparation of exams! While preparing for my exams next week, I experienced a mental block or rather, I started questioning my ability to pass this semester's exams! In actual fact, I am worried!

However, after reading Psalms 139, my fears are allayed. Psalms 139 talks about a prayer of David's invite to the Lord to search the heart of the hard drive. "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Psalms 139: 23".

For those having exams, all the best! Remember to take small breaks to recharge yourself and encourage the Lord to speak to you and be with you through this period. Remember, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13"

See you all soon in the little red dot!

Popping by..

Its been some time since I last updated my blog. I reckon I'm not doing any justice to my blog, but, my 40% assignment + revision for exams takes precedence over updating my blog. Sorry! I reckon not many people read my blog too! Ok, my exams are up in about 2 weeks time and I have not even started revision. Do not be quick to judge! I am ploughing through 10 articles that needs to be summarised in a table form + 200 word written summary + overall report and conclusion about the 10 studies and its worth 40% of my entire grade for my Public Health & Community Nutrition topic. I'm aiming for a distinction on this assignment so that I will get a decent grade for this topic.

Anyway, I shall not make any promises that I cannot keep by promising that I will update more frequently after the dreadful 'E' word is over. But I will try! All right, all the best to those having exams and I will see you all back in the sunny island that I call home! Cheers...

Hear ye! Hear ye!

Thank the Lord for the tiny blessings that He has bestowed upon me! Firstly, I received an email from Health Promotion Board (HPB) that the Youth Health division will be considering my application for an internship with them! I will know of the results by the end of the week. *Fingers crossed!*

Another good news is receiving an unexpected parcel from home. When I returned to my room for lunch, a message was left on the phone saying there was a parcel to collect. So, Phoebe went down to collect as I was on the phone with my friend. When she returned, it was in an A4 sized bubble-wrapped envelope. I opened it and it was the "Don't Quit" poster. So happy! Moreover, its arrival was timely. In the recent weeks, I have been feeling down because of the stresses from school work and placements and what not. Now, my poster is "sitting" happily on my pin board and I can read the words whenever I need encouragement! Thanks Soph! Miss ya.

Aiyah..Why like that?

31 more days before I return to the little red dot that I call home. However, before returning home, there are little hurdles that I have to jump before I reach the finish line. Before I started on this race, I reminded myself to pace myself and conserve my energy for the last leg of the race. However, as I ran, I felt myself becoming more and more tired. Why is that so?

In the bible, God said, "...let us run with perseverance the race marked out before us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus...Hebrews 12: 1-2". I want to complete this race that is set before me. However, try as I might, the road ahead seem narrow and the way is steep. Everything in front of me seem blurred. Is it the tears that I've been trying to hold back? Is it because I lack faith?

Recalled the theme song that my secondary school had when I was in Sec 1, Dare to run.

The road ahead is narrow
The way is sometimes steep
And only the committed
Claim the price.
But standing at the finish,
With arms outstretched to greet us,
Is the one who has endured the race
And paid the final price.

Chorus:
Dare to run
With our eyes fixed on Jesus
Following the footsteps
Of the One whose gone before us.
Dare to run
With power of the Spirit
Called to be victors
In the race already won,
Dare to run.

We must have our Saviour's vision
Compassion for the lost
Courage for the future
Love at any cost.

Repeat chorus

Why is it that I am not able to perform as well as I expect myself to be? There are too many things on my mind that I am worried about. My Public Health assignments, the upcoming exams, next year's placements...

Whispers: I need your presence Lord!

Embrace

Just received news from my lecturer that I will be returning to Adelaide for my community placements next year. Not sure how to describe my feelings. I'm feeling as if I am an irony. Here's why:

I remember myself saying that I hope to be able to do my placements in Adelaide so that I will be gain some experience before returning to the dietetics scene in Singapore hospitals. However, as time changes things, I soon began embracing the fact that I may have to return to Singapore to do my community placements at Health Promotion Board (HPB) as the other 4 Singaporeans were not keen at HPB. After embracing the fact for some time, Phoebe and I received a "bombshell" from one of the Singaporean that she is keen in returning to Singapore and doing her community placement at HPB. Great! This means that either Phoebe or I need to return to Adelaide for our community placement.

Anyways, a woman's sixth sense tend to be pretty accurate, mine did not fail on me. I had the feeling that I will be returning to Adelaide. True enough, I did! To make matters worst, the time frame for community placements is from 5th Feb to 23rd March, which means, I will be missing Lunar New Year which I really do not want to. Its the most important festival in the Lunar calendar and it also symbolise that a time where families reunite during that festival. To families who are supersitious, not reuniting during this period may bode bad luck for the rest of the Lunar calendar. As such, I am clinging onto a thin rope and hope that my parents will allow me to return for a short period to celebrate Lunar New Year.

This also spells that I will be spending about 2 short months in the sunny island before returning to Adelaide for placements. Time certainly waits for no man!

Irony

I can't seem to describe my life right now or rather the feelings that I'm feeling right now. Heard from my seniors in the 4th year of my course that 3rd year will be busy and challenging and yet at the same time fun. I tried preparing myself for it by being organised and finishing work one week ahead of time so that I would have some personal time to myself. However, as the academic year is fast approaching to an end, I am beginning to feel that I am losing steam. I still recall telling Liyan that as long as we do NOT lose steam at the end of the semester and get past this HUGE hurdle, that's all it matters right now!

However, I find myself trying to find a focus! My fingers are crossed hoping that history will NOT repeat itself (For those dear to me, you'd know what I am talking about and please keep it to yourself!). I am afraid of failures! What's more my future looks bleak! I do not even know when I will return to Adelaide next year! I hate it! Yes, I have to admit that I am a control-freak and need to be in-control of my life. As my younger sis have this quote, "A person is like sand. The harder you grip it, the more it will slip away". I know its good at times to take a step back and see things from another angle, another perspective. This then gives meaning to life.

However, in my current situation, I wish I can throw everything aside and return home where I am fondly cuddled and hugged! As each day past, the feeling of homesickness is starting to sink in. You must be saying, I have been here for about a year (9 months to be exact), I would have gotten used to it. But, I am a girl who is emotionally-attached to her family and friends and seriously, I yearn for the day when I know that when I return home, I can give bear hugs whenever I want, call my friends for a time of chit-chat without having to worry about assignments, randomly arranging to meet-up for a cup of tea knowing that you can choose from heaps of 24-hour coffeeshops and speaking in Singlish and no one will ask if you are speaking Greek. Do not get mistaken! I am not finding fault with life in Adelaide or the friendships that I have made and forged, its just that I miss home and I want to get home real bad!

Lord, I need your presence here. Please grant me the strength to be able to continue running the race that is set before me. Help me not to lose steam at this juncture, Lord. My shoulders are heavy from the burden that I am carrying. I'm lost. Please guide me, dear Lord. I pray and ask that you will bless my family and friends back home with good health! In His name, Amen.

Friday the 13th

Is it a superstition that Friday-the-13ths are doomed as unlucky? Well, my friday-the-13 was spent travelling to the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) for some time of ward allocation where I spent time talking to patients about themselves and about their diet and rushing back to the Hall to report to work for the last Formal Dinner (whose theme was Supersitition, Myth & Mayhem) that the Hall will be having for the academic year.

In the morning, I was trying to make an appointment with Health Counselling for a review appointment with the date and timing that I wanted but no such luck! I had to settle for some timing between my lunch break. Then, Phoebe and I wanted to make an appointment with the Housing manager to discuss some housing issues that we have for next year and again, we cannot get the time slot that we wanted. Fair enough! After all the "hassle", we headed down to RAH. Anyways, when I arrived at my ward, I approached the nurse at the nurses' station and asked for patients who were alert and able to hold a conversation. I was given 2 names but as luck would have it, Bed 12 patient was in the shower while Bed 30 patient was having an education session with the diabetes educator. Fair enough. I left the ward hoping that either patient would be available after lunch. I went down to the lobby of the hospital silently saying a prayer that I would be able to complete at least 3 diet histories for the day so that I will be closer in meeting the minimum of 10 diet histories for submission by 3rd Nov.

Praise the Lord for answering my prayer! After some time in the lobby, I went up to the ward again and patient at Bed 12 was back from the shower. So, I conducted the interview with him and got to observe the serving of lunch for awhile. I'm glad that things picked up when I returned to the ward after lunch and managed to meet my quota for the day.

As I needed to return to Uni Hall by about 4.15pm for some time of rest, Phoebe and I left RAH at 3pm to catch the 3.35pm 216. (For the benefit of those who do not know, buses in Adelaide run by a timetable). Anyways, the bus was late and only arrived at 3.45pm which means I would return to Uni Hall later. Anyways, Kar Hian called and told me to go to his place for some fried rice. Good! Shall space your eyes the details!

Reported to the dining hall at 5.15pm but was told to write in the clock in time as 5.30pm. We were pissed! (which means, we get paid lesser). But as luck would have it, half-way through the Formal dinner, the fire alarm went off!! For a moment, I thought it was a joke! But the Associate-Dean who was on the stage when it happened told most of the Hallies to file outside while we waited for the fire truck to arrive.

In a nutshell, friday-the-13th wasn't so bad! Or was it?

Where has time gone

Eeks!!! We are now in the month of October already! About 2 1/2 months left before the end of 2006. Time went by so quickly! I wonder what I've been up to for the past 9 1/2 months? The bulk of my time went to accomplishing assignments and case-studies and schema questions. Of course not forgetting the endless partying and get-togethers and surprise birthday bashes!

So speaking of next year, hopefully I will be able to graduate with a degree as planned. However, next year seem so bleak especially since I am not able to get confirmation from the lecturers with regards to when I will need to return to Adelaide be it 3 months or 5 weeks for just pure intensive until the end of the year! Well, a source of comfort from the Lord,

"..do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6: 34"

Anyhow, I am looking forward to returning to the little red dot on the world map on 23rd Nov. I miss the different local fares and the hanging out and catching up with family and friends! I wish I was in Singapore now!

Painball?

Ready Comrades?!!! Charge and Conquer!!!

Playing paintball is not just shooting your opponent and conquering your opponent's flag. Instead, it requires one to be daring, willing to take risks, have good aiming skills, and most importantly, able to withstand pain! The feeling of getting shot is certainly not a nice one and can cause the "shot wound" to leave you stinging and whinging in pain.

A group of 10 consisting of 2 guys and 8 GIRLS (Yes, 8 of us!) decided to drive to Port Adelaide to try our hand at paintball. Not knowing what is in store for each of us, we were all excited and our adrenalin pumping! When we reached there, the place looked dodgy. It looked like those kind of places we often see in drama serials that is usually used to house the kidnappers' captive. But, as the saying goes, never judge a book place by its cover. The paintball site was an indoor site that was furnished with cars that were waiting to be scraped, barrels and sandbags. After we were dressed and briefed on the game rules and how to use the gun, it was GAME ON!

We played for couple of hours trying out different game tactics. At the end of the day, we were exhausted, hungry and hurt. However, in the name of fun, we all had fun!

University Hall

Living in Uni Hall for close to 1 1/2 years and what can I say? Firstly, meals are being catered for but the meals prepared by the hall caterer does not seem to please the taste bud especially since Tina, the chef, left for another job. Secondly, my eggs have been stolen couple of times! Anyways, I'm glad that the academic year is almost coming to end and I have to tolerate it for another 2 months, I reckon!

Here's a little poem that one of the Hallies wrote for her Hiakus assignment and I thought it would be nice for you to see how living in Uni Hall is like.

University Hall Kitchen by Amy Bartel
Home brand chocolate
Drips into the plastic dish
Coating reduced flour.

Two minute noodles,
Often decorate the bench
In bright sticky clumps.

The stove’s light flickers,
And smells strange, but with a thump
Or two, it will start.

A sunburnt ochre
Rings the blackened hotplates and
Stubbornly stays put.

They’re not mine, she says,
Eyeing the cracked eggshells,
As her omelette cooks.

Someone has stolen
The washing detergent, and
The dishes pile up.

When my mum visits,
She has a horrified stare.
“You make food in here?”

End of semester,
The cleanliness is eerie,
But it will not last.

P/s: Its not that bad!

Recharge or not?!

The 2 weeks mid-semester break is almost coming to end. BOOHOOHOO!! But thank the Lord for 1 extra day of public holiday on Monday (Its Australia's Labour Day)! So, I don't have to worry about returning to school on Monday! Yay! No Monday Blues (Not that I have suffered from it before!).

Haven't really done much during this mid-semester break. What I mean is, didn't get the opportunity to travel and do abit of sight-seeing. Well, firstly, no driver's license so can't drive. Secondly, friend(s) sick so can't concentrate on driving long distances. Nonetheless, a break away from the monotony of school can do good to one. Hopefully, when term starts, I am all prepared to start the battle and continue to persereve!!!

Oh for the benefit of my family and friends in Singapore, I have changed the date of my airticket from 25th Nov to 23rd Nov since I end exams on 17th Nov! So which means, I get to eat all the Singaporean food and enjoy the company of all earlier! However, I reckon I am going to miss Adelaide since I am not sure how long I will be back next year with the shortest being 5 weeks. Oh well...let's not worry about next year's stuff! Alright, I'm gonna to enjoy every bit of the break that is left! Adios!

How well do I know you?

How can we find TRUE frienships in this often phony and temporary world?

Friendship often involves the recognition or familiarity with another's personality. It is often said and heard that friends share likes and dislikes, interests, pursuits, and passion. How then can we recognise potential friendship? Signs include a mutual desire for companionship and perhaps a common bond of some kind. Beyond that, genuine friendship involves a shared sense of caring and concern, a desire to see one another grow and develop, and a hope for each other to succeed in all aspects of life. True friendship involves action: doing something for someone else while expecting nothing in return; sharing thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or negative criticism.

Google the word "friendship" and you will often find that true friendship involves relationship. Many people often say, "Oh, he's a good friend of mine," yet, we never really take the effort to spend time with that "good friend." Friendship takes time: time to get to know each other, time to build shared memories, time to invest in each other's growth.

Trust is essential to true friendship. We all need someone with whom we can share our lives, thoughts, feelings, and frustrations. We need to be able to share our deepest secrets with someone, without worrying that those secrets will end up on the Internet the next day! Failing to be trustworthy with those intimate secrets can destroy a friendship in a hurry. Faithfulness and loyalty are key to true friendship. Without them, we often feel betrayed, left out, and lonely. In true friendship, there is no backstabbing, no negative thoughts, no turning away.

True friendship requires certain accountability factors. Real friends encourage one another and forgive one another where there has been an offense. Genuine friendship supports during times of struggle. Friends are dependable. In true friendship, unconditional love develops. We love our friends no matter what and we always want the best for our friends.

In the bible, there are examples of true friendships. One good example is the friendship shared between David and Jonathon in First Samuel 20. These two men truly cared for each other and had great trust and confidence in one another. David was running for his life from Jonathan's father, Saul. Jonathan recognised that David was innocent. Because of the true friendship they shared, David survived Saul's assassination attempts and went on to become one of Israel's greatest kings.

Real and true friendship involves freedom of choice, accountability, truth, and forgiveness. Real friendship looks at the heart, not just the "packaging." Genuine friendship loves for love's sake, not just for what it can get in return. True friendship is both challenging and exciting. It risks, it overlooks faults, and it loves unconditionally, but it also involves being truthful, even though it may hurt.

God's Word tells us that a friend sticks closer than a brother, and that in order for one to be a friend, one must show themselves friendly (Proverbs 18:24). The question is: what type of friend do you desire to be?

Randomness

I'm still alive! The mid-semester break has started and I am enjoying every bit of it. Nothing exciting has happened, just staying in my room working though the pile of assignments that are due when school starts. Of course, as the saying goes, "all work and no play makes Jo a dull girl!". I'm currently entertaining myself with a Canto drama called Return of the Cuckoo or Au Men Jie. (Yes, soph I know its been ages since I downloaded it from you. I just don't have the time to watch it!).

I'm also currently nursing a sore left index finger and no your eyes are NOT playing tricks on you! I went to the doctor today to find out what is wrong with it as I woke on Wednesday morning only to find that same finger (yes, it was sore the week before and the pain went away "mysteriously"!) sore! Anyway, I was explaining my condition about my left index finger and how and where it was painful to the doctor (I actually felt embarrassed!). Anyways, she did some little finger exercise trying to diagnose my condition but to no avail! So, at the end of the consultation, she told me that perhaps the tendon may have shifted from its sheath, that's why the discomfort and why I cannot bend and she told me that she has no idea with what is wrong with my left index finger! She presecribed me some anti-inflammatory drugs that cost $31.45 for 12 tablets (thank goodness its covered by my health insurance!) and told me to monitor it, hopefully the pain/soreness will "mysteriously" disappear! I sure hope so!!Its causing me heaps of inconvenience!

Anyway, I reckon next week will be more exciting as a group of us Singaporeans from Flinders SSA are planning to take a short trip to the Barossa Valley! I can't wait with all the endless stops at different wineries, sipping wine and enjoying the sun and not forgetting an early celebration for Mid-Autumn Festival! Haha..And SSA's steamboat with the rest of the committee members. Thanks guys for working so hard for all the events that we have organised! A BIG Pat on the back! Haha..Alright, till my next post and wipe that smile off your face!!!;P

School's out

What a week! Imagine you have all these due just before the term break:

Mon: Small Group Facilitation Assessment & Cystic Fibrosis case study

Tue: Stroke case study
Wed: Type 1 DM schema questions
Thu: Enteral Feeding schema questions
Fri: Needs Assessment Task, Personal Learning Statement & Report for Small Group Facilitation

Well, I am glad that this week is almost coming to an end. And what's more, the long awaited 2 weeks semester break is finally here! No more waking up early in the mornings for 2 weeks, no school routine for 2 weeks, though alot of assignments are due after the term break. Nonetheless, its a good break from the monotony of school work. For the first time in 8 weeks, I am going to get some retail therapy! Alrighty..Till the next one!

Timely

Thanks Baby! It is easy to get discouraged when things are going bad. But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering.Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God.
For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves, God has a positive answer for it.

You say: "It's impossible"
God says: All things are possible (Luke 18:27)

You say: "I'm too tired"
God says: I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28-30)

You say: "Nobody really loves me"
God says: I love you (John 3:16 & John 3:34)

You say: "I can't go on"
God says: My grace is sufficient (II Corinthians 12:9 & Psalm 91:15)

You say: "I can't figure things out"
God says: I will direct your steps (Proverbs 3:5-6)

You say: "I can't do it"
God says: You can do all things (Philippians 4:13)

You say: "I'm not able"
God says: I am able (II Corinthians 9:8)

You say: "It's not worth it"
God says: It will be worth it (Roman 8:28)

You say: "I can't forgive myself"
God says: I Forgive you (I John 1:9 & Romans 8:1)

You say: "I can't manage"
God says: I will supply all your needs (Philippians 4:19)

You say: "I'm afraid"
God says: I have not given you a spirit of fear (II Timothy 1:7)

You say: "I'm always worried and frustrated"
God says: Cast all your cares on ME (I Peter 5:7)

You say: "I don't have enough faith"
God says: I've given everyone a measure of faith (Romans 12:3)

You say: "I'm not smart enough"
God says: I give you wisdom (I Corinthians 1:30)

You say: "I feel all alone"
God says: I will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5)

Also, thank the Lord for the great things He has created. Today while I was returning back from my jog, I saw a rainbow arching across the horizon. The view was magnificent. After seeing it, I felt happy, rejuvenated and hopeful all over again! I felt that God was sending me a sign to ask me to go on and despite all the trials that I am going through and I know that there will be a rainbow at the end of every storm. So, dear peeps..hang in there and thanks for your concern! I'm now charged and raring to go! Can't wait for the term break to come!!!

Don't Quit

Dedicated to all in times of trials!
Don't Quit
Author Unknown

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road your trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and its turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When they might have won, had they stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victors cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when your hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit!

Thanks Sophie and Baby!Miss you guys lots!

Losing steam, perhaps?

I don't know what swept over me! Ever since receiving the email with regards to the impending Honours potential project titles for 2007, I have been doing alot of thinking since Sunday. Today, I contemplated with the thought of withdrawing from it. I did my mental sums for my GPA and after calculation, I doubt I have the ability to qualify for it. Even if I score strings of distinctions this semester, I would not be able to "push" my GPA up to a 6. No point crying over spilled milk. I know, I'm not crying and I am not regretting for not doing well because, the results that I obtained for last semester is what I have prayed and asked for. Glory to God for answering my prayers!

Anyway, I was chatting with my younger sister and I was telling her about my thinking of pulling out from the Honours programme. She gave me alot of constructive remarks and advise and yes, she did encourage me to try and if I did not qualify it, I should be contented that out of the 24 who expressed interest, I should be contented that those who did qualify, were true competitors. However, if I chose to pull out without even trying and someone who had a lower GPA qualified, I would hit the roof!

But I am feel that I am beginning to lose steam and need to find sources of motivation to keep me going. I remember telling Liyan that despite being a tough semester, as long as we do not lose steam and complete the race that is set before us, that's all it matters!

When I started writting this entry, I had no idea where this entry would lead to. However, I am glad that there were several lessons that I can take home. I know that I have a supportive family and friends back home that I know I will not be judged based on my grades and whether or not I qualify for the programme, I know I am always and will be welcomed with both arms extended. I thank the Lord for the opportunity for me to be able to pursue a university education.

Lord, I just pray and ask them you will grant me the strength to go through the rest of this semester. I pray and ask them you will guide me through and I want to commit the Honours Programme into your hands. Lord, whether or not I qualify, I just pray that it is all part of the great plan you have for me. Bless those dear to me Lord. Amen

Time Out

I have been rather busy since I last returned from Flinders Ranges trip. Some friends have commented that I looked tired. Perhaps its the many late nights I spent working on my essay trying to do it to the best of my ability. Besides, I made a silent resolution that thou shall work hard and perform to the best of my ability and try to qualify for the honours programme. However, I silently pray and hope that I do not step over people while working towards my goal.

Recently, I took a personality test and I am 88% sanguine and 12% phlegmatic. Take Test!

If you are a sanguine-phlegmatic, most everyone likes you! You are easy-going, creative, fun-loving, enthusiastic, imaginative, caring, generous, flexible, and spontaneous. You are probably considered “emotional” because of your easily aroused feelings, your attentiveness to relationships, and your tender heart.

Your weaknesses are superficiality, indecisiveness, disorganization, and procrastination. Often you find it difficult to know exactly how to state what you mean, or how to express yourself logically; this contributes to a tendency to talk more than is needed or to provide more detail than is necessary.

In a relationship, you will likely gravitate toward a logical, organized, strong-willed and decisive partner—someone who makes decisions quickly and provides strong moral certitude and structure to your life. You can be easily influenced (which is exacerbated by your tendency to ask others for advice — without thinking it through) and to do what seems “kind” before considering whether it is objectively right. Many sanguine-phlegmatics are drawn to teaching (and parenting), the helping professions, and volunteer works for the Church or for the welfare of society.

You place a high priority on your personal search for meaning and self-identity. The strong need to discover your “true self” will be met by a rich prayer life and a personal relationship with Christ. Your weaknesses probably tend to bother you more than anyone else. For example, you may find yourself blurting out something without thinking, or spending too much time seeking advice only to find yourself more confused than you started, or oversleeping every day this week — despite all the best of intentions. You may find yourself becoming overcommitted because you simply can’t say “no” and have a strong need to be liked/please people.

A typical sanguine-phlegmatic trick is to spend too much money shopping or (better yet) dining out with friends, and then to put off balancing the checkbook (too much work, too many other distractions) until it is hopelessly behind. Now you are overwhelmed with everything that has piled up! You may complain half-heartedly, blame circumstances, or go shopping. . . but you may not really make a concerted effort to change.

Flinders Ranges Trip

All aboard?!! The trip to Flinders Ranges was an awesome experience not forgetting that the trip was timely and half-sponsored by my da jie as part of my birthday present! Anyways, enough of talking. Here goes..

Flinders ranges national park was proclaimed in 1972, measuring 94,908 hectares and is recognised as one of Australia's finest. Its rugged mountain scenary, peaceful tree-lined gorges and range of wildlife and flora, no wonder I was attracted to it!

Day 1: Travelled out of Adelaide and headed north passing through Clare, Melrose and Mount Remarkable. After sitting on the bus for God knows how long, we prepared ourselves to walk into Alligator Gorge. After which, we attempted to catch the sunset while heading into Wilpena pound where the night was spent sleeping under the blanket of stars (P/s: I saw shooting stars!). Be warned! The night was freezing!

Day 2: This morning, we scaled Mount Olsen Bagge, which is 941m above sea level. While climbing, it offered magnificent views into Wilpena pound and surrounding rugged mountain scenaries. We then departed for Angorichina, stopping at Stokes Lookout and to catch a glimpse of the Great Wall of China. After arriving at Angorichina, one explored the many walking trails that it has to offer. Accomodation was bunk-house style.

Day 3: An early morning bike was recommended through the magnificent Parachilna gorge. After which, we travelled down the track to view the Yourambulla Art site, Kayaka Historic site, before stopping for a quick lunch at Quorn and then scaling Devil's Peak. We returned to Adelaide via the highway making a stop at Port Germian, which has the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere that is a kilometer long.

What a week!

The past 1 week was a busy one for me. With 2 SSA (Singapore Students Association) events in one week, it is more than enough to kill anybody! (esp with a committee with about 5 hardworking members, no offense!). Nearly every night, an informal meeting was held in my room with Yzanne and Kar Hian becoming regular visitors!

Anyways, I am glad the 2 events are over, giving me time to finish up my assignments that are due 2 weeks later. For the benefit of those who may not know, Phoebe and I will be going on a short trip to Flinders Ranges, a backyard of South Australia. Flinders Ranges allow one to be able to enjoy outback life in Aussie style with lots of hiking and camping. I can't wait to go on this trip!! What's more, the trip is half-sponsored by my da jie as my 21st birthday prezzie! What more can I say for?? Anyways, I better get cracking and complete my case-studies and schema questions. Till the next post..Take care!

Confused and afraid

For those dear to me will be able to understand what a weakling I am when it comes to making decision about my life. As Kar Hian will say, "You very WEAK!"

I received some good news yesterday, depending on how others view it. Anyways, my lecturer announced that students doing the Bachelor course will be able to apply for honours next year. However, the criteria is purely based on a minimium GPA of 5 (highest GPA is 7) for year 3 subjects. As such, no matter how well you've performed for the last 2 years does not count (which is good cos I kinda screwed up last year!).

I've counted my semester 1's GPA and I'm abt a 5.33. I'm not sure whether I will be able to qualify for the programme considering the fact that they are alot of smarties in my course and yes, who ever said getting into these programmes are not competitive? I submitted my application today after a night's worth of consideration and advice from family and friends. Not hopeful that I will qualify. (No confidence lar!). Life is surely not a bed of roses but filled with thorns as well.

I have to agree what Phoebe say. We chose to come to Flinders because their programme gave us the opportunity to become a full-fledge dietitian when we graduate. Unlike the other unis that offer similiar nutrition & dietetics programme, students have to fight to get into the 4th year to become a dietitian. And whether or not we are successful in our application for the honours programme, it is just an added bonus because our ULITMATE AIM is to become a dietitian!

Lord, I just ask that this is part of the plan that you have for me. I pray and ask for your guidance. In His name, Amen.

Birthday Hijack!

Together with a group of close friends and coursemates, we planned a MEMBORABLE 21st birthday celebration for Phoebe and 1 that she would live to tell the tale. Planning started right after I ended my exam paper on 21st June, with my devious mind thinking and planning how her party would be on the selected date.

Phoebe did not suspect a thing when I stayed up late the week that school started with no pressing assignment or readings that was "supposedly" due. She found it funny but I managed to crap some excuse up. Anyways, to cut the story short, Phoebe was pleased with the birthday bash! YAY!! Success, people! She was floured on her way to Jun's house for "dinner" and then, her ears were treated with "POPS!" erupting from the party poppers. Also, I have never realised that Phoebe can be so obedient. We were in the midst of playing mafia where we had to close our eyes. While our game master, Jeannie, instructed all of us to close our eyes, we got busy and started to prepare for the cake as well presenting the present to her!

Phoebe, I'm glad that you enjoyed the birthday celebration. Like I said, I promised to make your turning 21 the most memorable 1 ever! Happy Birthday girl!

First Day of School

First day of school. Felt good to be back to be able to catch with friends and coursemates. On the other hand, the mad adrenalin rush to complete your readings and assignments on time is starting to seep in bit by bit. I hate it! Why is N&D at Flinders so infamously known for being busy and having tonnes of readings and assignments? Perhaps, that is the difference between the science and the arts stream. These arts students sure have it easy! Anyways, while I got started on my first reading for the semester, this song popped into my head, one that I used to sing during Chapel sessions.

I don't know about tomorrow
I don't know about tomorrow,
I just live from day to day.
I don't borrow from it's sunshine,
For it's skies may turn to gray.
I don't worry o'er the future,
For I know what Jesus said,
And today I'll walk beside Him,
For He knows what is ahead.
Refrain:
Many things about tomorrow,
I don't seem to understand;
But I know
Who holds tomorrow,
And I know Who holds my hand.
Ev'ry step is getting brighter,
As the golden stairs I climb;
Ev'ry burden's getting lighter;
Ev'ry cloud is silver lined.
There the sun is always shining,
There no tear will dim the eyes,
At the ending of the rainbow,
Where the mountains touch the sky.
Refrain
I don't know about tomorrow,
It may bring me poverty;
But the One Who feeds the sparrow,
Is the One Who stands by me.
And the path that be my portion,
May be through the flame or flood,
But His presence goes before me,
And I'm covered with His blood.
Its true! I don't know what will happen tomorrow and I will never seem to understand but I have this assurance from my Lord that whatever happens, it is by his will. Yes, my coursework may bore me and occupy most of my time but I am assured that this is part of the great plan that the Lord has for me.
Lord, thank you for reminding me of your presence whenever we are in doubt or are lost and looking for a direction. Lord, thank you for the many friendships that have been forged and for allowing my path and that of others to be crossed so that we may help each other along the way. Thank you, Lord! Amen.

Trip M

Time flies. School officially starts tomorrow!! ARGH! Anyways, my trip to Melbourne or Trip M was a GOOD one! Enjoyed every bit of my time there! In that short 6 days, I've been on a train journey passing through acres and acres of land, been to the snowy mountain, been to the sub-tropical rainforests, been to the Great Ocean, been to the hills, been back in good, old Victorian times and of course, a very Metropolitan city!!By the way, did you know that there's a Charles & Keith shoe shop, a HMV music store and not forgetting the trusty 7-eleven 24-hour shop? I know I sound like a country bumpkin but you see, we do not get these shops in Adelaide as such, for the time that I was there, I could not help but compare BORING Adelaide with EXCITING Melbourne! Alright, enough of crap, enjoy the pics!
